Automated Steel Flare Detection System
A Fully automated, Laser vision based system powered by LabVIEW to detect, measure and log steel edge flares to aid production.
The process of inspecting steel for flaring is an important stage of the production cycle. Typically, an employee can visually inspect a continuous stream of steel strips to identify flares and estimate their dimensions. A cutting blade can then later be used to remove the defect. This method tends to be wasteful and is prone to human-error.
The solution to automate the inspection uses NI LabVIEW and a third party Laser Scanner, Linear Actuator and Wheel Encoder to create an inspection system capable of continuous 3D surface mapping for accurate inspection of flare defects while storing live data for analysis. This solution eliminates human error by being able to fully automate the flare defect removal.
