IoT-Enabled CRDS Sensor for UAV
Portable System for Trace Gas Monitoring based on the sbRIO-9651
An academic institution needed to commercialize an emerging Cavity Ringdown Spectroscopy (CRDS) methane sensor technology that was the subject of pure research. Success of the project was measured by the ability to demonstrate working sensors in geographically disparate outdoor portable, vehicle and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) applications. Key to success were utilization of cellular-based internet of things (IoT) techniques to remotely publish data to Amazon Web Services (AWS). TCB Engineers specified the National Instruments Single Board RIO system-on-module (sbRIO-9651 SOM) as the embedded controller primarily due to advantageous size, weight and power (SWaP) vs. computational capability. TCB Engineers designed a custom sbRIO-9651 carrier and integrated low-noise electronic circuits capable of portable operation while consuming less than 6 watts.
